Position: Primary Teacher (Maternity Cover)

Location: Schools across Brighton & Hove (specific placement based on need)
Contract: Fixed-term maternity cover (expected duration: 6–12 months)
Hours: Full-time (32.5 hours/week – term time)


🌟 About the Role

Brighton & Hove City Council is seeking a dedicated and adaptable Primary Teacher to provide maternity cover during an exciting period of school development. As part of a forward-thinking, inclusive team, you’ll maintain continuity of learning and help create a positive classroom environment for children aged 5–11.


📋 Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver, and assess engaging lessons aligned with the National Curriculum across core subjects.

  • Create and foster a nurturing and inclusive classroom atmosphere where every pupil feels valued and supported.

  • Carry out formative and summative assessments; use results to inform adaptive teaching and learning activities.

  • Collaborate with colleagues on cross-phase planning, moderation, and enrichment programmes.

  • Maintain classroom management and pupil welfare through clear routines and positive reinforcement.

  • Communicate regularly with parents and carers regarding student progress, both informally and in writing.

  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development activities, and meet with parents/carers as part of interim responsibilities.

  • Actively promote safeguarding, equality, diversity, and inclusion throughout your classroom practice.


Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK.

  • Experience teaching primary-aged pupils in KS1 and/or KS2.

  • Good understanding of the National Curriculum and effective use of assessment for learning.

  • Strong classroom management and behaviour support strategies.

  • Effective communication skills with pupils, parents, and colleagues.

  • Commitment to inclusion and meeting a range of learners’ needs.

  • Ability to work flexibly and maintain consistent teaching quality over the maternity-cover period.


🎓 Desirable Qualifications & Attributes

  • Experience supporting children with SEND or EAL.

  • Familiarity with Brighton & Hove local educational priorities or initiatives (e.g. Oracy, Inquiry Learning).

  • Skills in pastoral care, restorative practice, or pupil wellbeing support.

  • Willingness to contribute to extracurricular activities or whole-school events.
