Position: Cleaning Assistant

🧹 About the Role

Liverpool City Council is committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness in its public buildings to ensure they are welcoming, safe, and hygienic for residents and staff. We are looking for a dedicated and reliable Cleaning Assistant to join our cleaning services team, contributing to the upkeep of community spaces across the city.


📋 Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and polishing of floors, chairs, tables, windowsills, and fittings.

  • Sanitize and disinfect high-touch surfaces, toilets, washrooms, and kitchen areas according to set schedules.

  • Empty, sort, and dispose of waste and recycling materials responsibly.

  • Restock supplies (e.g., soap, paper towels, toilet tissue) and monitor inventory levels.

  • Report damaged equipment, maintenance issues, or hazards to the site supervisor promptly.

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, COSHH regulations, and safe use of cleaning chemicals.

  • Support locker room, gym, or event cleaning as needed in leisure centres or other council venues.

  • Adhere to scheduled timetables, respond flexibly to changing cleaning needs (including occasional evening or weekend shifts).


Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Previous experience in commercial or public-sector cleaning (preferred but not essential; full training will be provided).

  • Awareness of health and safety practices and correct use of cleaning products.

  • Good time-management skills and the ability to work unsupervised.

  • Punctuality, reliability, and a “can-do” attitude.

  • Effective communication skills and ability to work cooperatively within a team.


🎓 Desirable Qualifications & Attributes

  • Experience with specialist cleaning equipment (e.g., floor polishers, steam cleaners).

  • Training or certification in manual handling or COSHH.

  • Awareness of safeguarding principles when working in community settings.

  • Flexibility to cover additional cleaning duties during special events or public holidays.
